This is a theory used in NLP to help people understand how we all see and live life differently but within the same reality.
It is like considering using a map of city to find your way around. You will get the basic overview of the city…but you will be missing the finer details. Once you are in the physical location, having a full sensory experience of it, it is much different to the map you studied.
This is similar to life. We each have our own beliefs, perceptions, ideas, experiences of life and of reality…and it is from this map that we see the world. We each have a different map.
And we often forget that others are looking at the same reality but through a different set of beliefs, perceptions etc…they have their own map that they are guided by.
Where someone may see a rainbow, another will only see the rain. Where someone sees hardship and failure, another may see opportunity and hope….it is all down to their own map.
And knowing that everyone is seeing the world from a different perspective, no matter how big or small…can help to remind us to maybe take a breath before reacting to how others are traversing through your own map. It can help us remember that everyone is doing their best with what they have experienced and learned (or not learned) in their life.
We are all living in the same reality, but our true north is always different.
